It just didn’t work out the way they thought it would.Īnyways, I thought this was weird and had to share.Sounding more like Blue Oyster Cult with a heavy and fatalistic song, the group's Top 40 debut on the EMI America label - 45 RPM #8007 - is four minutes and twenty-two seconds of J.Geils Band taking their blues/rock and pouring more gloss and pop into it than ever before.

With the pop sound of Centerfold being a huge success for the band (and being written by Seth Justman, who was the lead singer / writer for the Odd album), it makes perfect sense that this album happened. So it could have been better!Īlmost 40 years later, with the band’s namesake guitarist dead and the band long split up, it’s interesting in retrospect to see how this album came to be. That said, critics absolutely hated the album and it was the end of the band. I keep coming back to it because it’s so…odd. It’s very of it’s time, with lots of gated reverb and is bursting at the seams with synthesizer sounds, but i actually kinda like it. Why were they different? Did they realize the album sounded better pitched up down the road? Was it a mistake in the vinyl pressing? It’s strange.įinally, the lyrics are…interesting. Just listen to the cassette version versus the vinyl version of the first track “Concealed Weapons”. The vinyl version is 25% lower pitched than the cassette version, which makes it sound awful. Second of all, the album isn’t consistent at all between the vinyl version and the cassette version. Maybe not Queen’s News of The World creepy, but pretty darn close. The only place you’ll find it are bootleg versions on YouTube and a copy that someone uploaded to, of all places, .įirst of all the album art is, fittingly, odd. This album is so unknown (or the band hated it so much) it doesn’t show up on the major music platforms. So he went off and started a solo career, while the rest of the band went on to release one last album - “You’re Gettin’ Even While I’m Gettin’ Odd” This departure didn’t sit well with their lead singer Peter Wolf, who was basically pushed out of the band because he didn’t want to head down the pop direction the band was taking. In the early 80s they had the major hit “ Centerfold”, which was a huge departure from their original blues-rock sound, and the song is now a staple in classic rock stations everywhere. Geils Band, they’re one of biggest rock groups of the 70s.
